The Neurological Progressive Care Unit (9B) at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is a high-acuity progressive care unit that specializes in the treatment and recovery of complex neurological and neurosurgical patients. Established to support and decompress the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), 9B offers nurses the opportunity to develop advanced clinical expertise while working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The unit cares for a diverse range of neurological and neurosurgical patients, including those recovering from craniotomies, spinal surgeries, deep brain stimulator procedures, stroke, seizures, subarachnoid hemorrhage, neuromuscular diseases, CNS infections, and advanced neurosurgical interventions. Nurses gain experience managing specialized therapies such as ventricular and lumbar drains, tracheostomies, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen therapy, and complex IV infusions. The unit is committed to delivering exceptional, patient-centered care through thoughtful staffing practices, collaborative teamwork, and a strong culture of professional development. Nurses work alongside a highly skilled and compassionate team dedicated to supporting patients and families through some of their most challenging healthcare journeys. Staffing ratios are thoughtfully adjusted to meet patient acuity needs, with ideal nurse-to-patient assignments of 1:3, and 1:2 for our highest-acuity patients, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, patient-centered care.
