About The Position

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring full-time Registered Nurses for its 24-bed Vascular Stepdown Intermediate Care Unit (9K), which specializes in vascular surgery, telemetry, and renal/pancreas transplant care. The unit is part of the Surgical Specialty Team and provides care in a high-acuity stepdown setting. Every bed is monitored, and the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4. Nurses care for patients undergoing procedures including aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, femoral bypass surgeries, and amputations, and support renal/pancreas transplant patients in partnership with the outpatient transplant center. The role is open to new graduate nurses and experienced nurses moving into the specialty. New hires receive specialized training, and the unit supports nurses pursuing PCCN certification. The 11-week Transition to Practice program supports orientation, knowledge development, and skill acquisition for IMC practice; for new graduates, it begins a comprehensive six-month residency program. The Registered Nurse performs competent nursing care using the nursing process. Practice includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching, health promotion, and evaluation, along with professional standards such as ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN applies clinical knowledge and skills required by the specific clinical area.
