Registered Nurse - Pre-Op/PACU - RN

Mayo Clinic•Jacksonville, FL

About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, functioning within the Mayo Nursing Care Model to plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of care for assigned patients. Practice is grounded in the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. In the Pre-Op/PACU department, the RN cares for patients before and immediately after surgical procedures; the role does not involve performing surgery. Responsibilities span Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU. Nurses assess and address pre-operative issues, start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and explain instructions, rights, and procedures. In PACU, nurses care for patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. The department is a fast-paced unit that uses critical care nursing concepts and has 72 beds, 95 nurses, 11 patient care technicians, and 8 clinical assistants. Ratios are 1 RN to 3 patients in Pre-Op, 1 RN to 2 patients in Phase 1 PACU, and 1 RN to 3 patients in Phase 2 PACU. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources.
