About The Position

The Registered Nurse provides inpatient medicine and telemetry nursing care to Veterans. The 3L RN uses sound clinical judgment and independent decision-making based on nursing-care standards. The nurse detects emergencies promptly, prevents complications, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, educates patients and families to support self-care, health maintenance, and rehabilitation, and facilitates discharge from acute care. The position includes interpreting continuous telemetry monitoring (training may be provided upon hire), managing and teaching diabetes care, caring for gastric, intestinal, and/or percutaneous drainage and feeding tubes, administering and monitoring medications, and providing advanced vascular access care and maintenance. The nurse facilitates home-care referrals and rehabilitation recommendations, collaborates with disciplines including Social Work, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Laboratory, and supports patient and caregiver education. The role also maintains skills in preventing and managing disruptive behavior (training may be provided upon hire) and promotes evidence-based practices and nurse-sensitive indicators, including falls prevention, hospital-associated infection prevention, medication-error prevention, safe patient handling, and skin safety. The position supports the VA Midwest Health Care Network’s Whole Health System, which aims to empower Veterans to take charge of their health and well-being through personalized health plans, healing relationships and environments, and connection to the Veteran’s community. The role is not eligible for telework and is not virtual. The schedule is full-time, with varying day and night shifts and rotating holidays and weekends.
