Registered Nurse, Elective Surgery, PRN (Nights) - VUH
About The Position
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Elective Surgery unit at Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH). This PRN (as needed) night shift position involves providing care to adult patients undergoing planned, elective surgical procedures across multiple specialties. The unit is a fast-paced, specialized post-surgical care environment on a new unit opening June 25, 2026. Patients typically have a clear surgical plan and a recovery pathway focused on rapid mobilization, pain management, and discharge readiness, with a generally short length of stay (24 hours to 2-3 days). This inpatient unit offers a predictable and structured workflow, allowing nurses to build a strong, supportive team culture while opening a new unit.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of RN experience
- Nursing degree
- State or Compact License (TN license within 60 days of getting TN address even if compact license)
- Graduate of an approved discipline specific program

Responsibilities
- Applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning.
- Effectively communicates pertinent patient/family information to the health care team.
- Collaborates in establishing patient goals and evaluates progress to ensure effective outcomes.
- Furthers professional growth by engaging in learning activities according to the Board of Nursing standards.
- Collaborates in establishing the plan of care, coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the continuum.
- Analyzes comprehensive information pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine nursing diagnosis.
- Continually utilizes the nursing process to evaluate patient's progress towards goals and applies appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes.
- Employs strategies to promote health and a safe and healthy environment.
