This is a 24-bed unit specializing in the care of adult thoracic surgical patients requiring lung, esophageal, and other foregut surgical procedures. All rooms are equipped with ECG monitoring and advanced capabilities for invasive and noninvasive blood pressure monitoring. Patients on this unit require specialized post-surgical care, including the management of drainage systems, wound care, and early mobilization. A strong emphasis is placed on respiratory assessment, intervention, and managing the postoperative recovery process. The nursing team plays an integral role in advocating for positive patient outcomes through teamwork and multidisciplinary care. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care, supporting professional nursing practice across various settings and the continuum of care. The RN operates within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which involves accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients, guided by the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership positions, and quality improvement initiatives. Patient care delegation is based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are essential, and participation in committees or projects may be expected. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as part of their role responsibilities. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, which requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
