This specific role is for a Registered Nurse in the Thoracic Surgery Progressive Care unit, a 24-bed unit specializing in adult thoracic surgical patients requiring lung, esophageal, and other foregut surgical procedures. All rooms are equipped with ECG monitoring and advanced capabilities for invasive and noninvasive blood pressure monitoring. Patients on this unit require specialized post-surgical care, including management of drainage systems, wound care, and early mobilization. A strong emphasis is placed on respiratory assessment, intervention, and management of the postoperative recovery process. The nursing team promotes mobility and independence, provides patient and family education, and manages discharge planning. Nurses advocate for positive patient outcomes and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary care setting. The RN is accountable for coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, education, and transitions of care, functioning within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and adhering to the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. Leadership is demonstrated through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. Delegation of patient care is based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are essential. Participation in committees or projects may be required. Some employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle for job responsibilities. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, requiring state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

Graduate of a nursing program recognized by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA.
One year of RN experience required.
Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date; acceptable certifications include: American Heart Association (AHA)/ Heartcode® BLS, Military Training Network, Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Experience working in a team environment.
Computer skills required.
Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020, and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
