About The Position

The Registered Nurse works in the 28-bed Surgical Trauma ICU at VCU Medical Center, a Level I adult, pediatric, and burn trauma center. The unit provides comprehensive care to severely injured and critically ill surgical patients, including continuous renal replacement therapy, advanced ventilation, massive transfusion, extensive wound care, and post-surgical resuscitation and care. Care is delivered by multidisciplinary teams across trauma ICU and surgical ICU services. Depending on clinical level, the nurse integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge, delivers and accurately documents age-specific direct care in accordance with medical orders and multidisciplinary care plans, and safely administers prescribed medications. The nurse helps prevent illness and injury, maintain wellness, and provide comfort. Clinical Nurse II and III roles additionally recognize or anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately; nurses provide direction and education, mobilize resources as applicable, and assume unit-level leadership or serve as a clinical role model. Nurses follow physician or licensed independent provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCU Health System policies and procedures. They organize work and may delegate and supervise the work of other staff. Clinicians work across all three shifts, including weekends and holidays; individual rotations and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit needs. This is a PRN, rotating position.
