5 North is a 26-bed General Surgery specialty unit at Atrium Health Mercy, functioning as a Med-Surg Unit with heavy surgical volume. The unit specializes in elective bariatric weight loss surgery, general surgery (e.g., appendectomies, cholecystectomies, small bowel obstruction), foot and ankle orthopedics (e.g., total ankle replacements, infected foot wounds, BKA's), and urology surgery. Nurses on this unit gain experience with various drains, wound vacs, central lines, NGT, DHT, and other surgical procedures. Atrium Health Mercy is a 196-bed facility of Carolinas Medical Center (CMC), Magnet designated in Nursing Excellence, and a Planetree designated patient-centered hospital.
