The Outpatient Surgery department's scope of care includes pre-anesthesia, post-anesthesia, and post-procedural care. This involves preparing patients for surgery/procedures by assessing their physical status, providing pre-operative teaching, assisting patients in returning to a safe physiological level after anesthesia, and preparing them for discharge. Patient care is guided by the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses standards. The Department of Anesthesiology provides medical direction and coverage. A multi-disciplinary approach is used, with therapies including pre-operative preparation, post-operative observation, hemodynamic stability assessment, oxygen administration, pulse oximetry, arterial/venous sheath monitoring and removal, and discharge instructions. Anesthetic agents are not administered in this department. Outpatient Surgery operates Monday through Friday from 0530-2200, closed on holidays and weekends, with a standby team for unexpected cases. The Registered Nurse assesses, implements or delegates, plans, and evaluates total nursing care, functioning in accordance with established philosophy and providing and directing patient care. The nurse relates effectively with other shifts/departments for optimal continuity of care.
