About The Position

Mayo Clinic is seeking a Perioperative Circulating Nurse to join its Operating Room Team. This role involves supporting complex, high-acuity surgical cases and caring for patients undergoing advanced surgical procedures. Nurses will work alongside nationally recognized surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary OR teams, utilizing robotic-assisted surgery, state-of-the-art ORs, and advanced imaging technology. The position offers exposure to a broad range of perioperative and surgery specialties. Comprehensive OR training and specialty-focused onboarding are provided, with prior OR experience not required. Dedicated preceptorship, mentorship, and ongoing clinical support, as well as ongoing education and professional development opportunities, are available. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care to meet patient and family needs, functioning within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model. This includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care. The RN provides leadership through roles such as preceptor, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts, and delegates patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. The RN must possess excellent communication skills, be skillful in mentoring and teaching, and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as part of their role. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, requiring state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited, or those in the candidacy process, associate, or diploma nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA)
  • If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020, and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date - acceptable BLS certificates are American Health Associate: "BLS Provider" or American Red Cross: "Basic Life Support" or "CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and health Care Providers."
  • Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area
  • Possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Skillful in mentoring and teaching
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting
  • A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role

Nice To Haves

  • One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide Perioperative care as a Circulating Nurse in the Operating Room (OR)
  • Coordinate patient care throughout the perioperative continuum
  • Prepare ORs, maintain sterile technique and uphold patient safety standards
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and interdisciplinary OR teams
  • Support evidence-based practice and quality improvement
  • Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family
  • Function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, including accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients
  • Provide leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources
