The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical PCU at Texas Health Fort Worth delivers care to patients utilizing the Nursing Process, which includes assessing the patient, planning the care, intervening as appropriate, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. This role incorporates age-specific safety and infection control measures, initiates actions to meet patient and/or significant others' need for information, and maintains continuity of patient care between shifts, hospitals, and during transfers. The Medical PCU is a 28-bed department providing an intermediate level of care to a wide variety of medical patients at a 3:1 patient-to-nurse ratio. This patient population requires specialized monitoring and interventions for diagnoses such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), respiratory compromised patients requiring specialized equipment (continuous respiratory interventions, home ventilation systems, tracheostomy care), multi-system organ failure, respiratory distress, sepsis, hematology, GI Bleeds, Renal/Liver Failure, Acid-Base and Electrolyte Imbalances, and cardiac abnormalities. Medication management includes continuous and titratable IV medications. The department is part of a MAGNET facility, a Level I Trauma Center, and a Primary Heart Attack Center.
