About The Position

Within the context of a patient and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision, values and policies of the organization, provides comprehensive forensic nursing care to patients triaged to Forensic and/or Sexual Assault Nursing services. Practices in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Standards (professional & practice) and code of ethics for a Registered Nurse. Practices within the scope of practice as set by the organization, as per VCH policies and guidelines/clinical practice documents and within own competence. Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of recognized Sexual Assault/Forensic Nurse Examiner coursework.
  • Two (2) years’ recent and related nursing experience in an acute or public health setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive forensic nursing care to patients triaged to Forensic and/or Sexual Assault Nursing services.
  • Practices in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Standards (professional & practice) and code of ethics for a Registered Nurse.
  • Practices within the scope of practice as set by the organization, as per VCH policies and guidelines/clinical practice documents and within own competence.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
  • Ability to demonstrate therapeutic interviewing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/care givers, the public, medical staff and members of the interprofessional care team using verbal, written and electronic communication means.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contraceptive management and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/care givers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences and patient advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of professionals from the health and legal professions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to use factual information, prior learning and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the physical duties of the position.
