About The Position

This is a training opportunity for a Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Emergency Department at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The role involves practicing within a patient and family-centered care model, adhering to the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and code of ethics. The RN will provide emergency nursing to patients of all ages with diverse symptoms in an uncontrolled environment, including unique populations like victims of sexual assault. Responsibilities include acting as a triage nurse to assess patient needs and prioritize care, stabilizing and resuscitating multi-trauma victims as part of the emergency response team, preparing for and responding to disaster situations, enhancing patient/family quality of life, consulting and collaborating with other healthcare givers, demonstrating expertise and leadership, maintaining clinical competence, and participating in designated committees and research projects. The Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Centre seeing over 93,000 patients annually, with specialized care for trauma, interventional cardiology, stroke, and other areas. It features 70+ patient care spaces divided into acute care, trauma, mental health, and lower-acuity zones, offering a dynamic and fast-paced environment. VGH ED is one of BC’s busiest departments, caring for a diverse urban population and critically ill patients from across the province. Staff work in a high-acuity environment with multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to critical care cases and benefiting from strong leadership, ongoing education, and growth opportunities.

Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Resume and cover letter required to apply for this specialty training opportunity.
  • Eligibility for the post-basic training education is prioritized to applicants with approximately two years recent acute medical/surgical experience upon critical care program full-time start date.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department.
  • Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status nurse in the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training.
  • In the event that a candidate leaves the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they were hired or VCH in under 18 months, VCH will seek to recover the cost of the program.

Responsibilities
