About The Position

The PREOP/GI role is a dynamic, multi-functional clinical position responsible for supporting patients and providers throughout the perioperative and procedural continuum. Team members in this role function in several capacities, including GI technician support, patient preparation, circulating responsibilities, bronchoscopy assistance, anesthesia support, and post-procedure recovery. The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

Requirements

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the GI physician during procedures.
  • Maintain and manage endoscopy equipment, including holding scopes and assisting during procedural steps.
  • Perform scope cleaning and reprocessing tasks according to established standards and infection control guidelines.
  • Circulate GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy cases as assigned.
  • Assist the anesthesiologist with airway management and patient positioning.
  • Complete accurate and detailed intra-procedural documentation, including specimen collection and handling.
  • Ensure safe, efficient workflow and communication throughout procedures.
  • Prepare patients for GI, surgical, and bronchoscopy procedures.
  • Assist anesthesia with peripheral nerve blocks, including operating the ultrasound machine, assisting the provider with catheter placement, and administering and pushing medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Perform IV insertion, medication administration, collection of medical history, shaving (as applicable), and comprehensive physical assessment with appropriate documentation.
  • Recover patients following GI procedures in accordance with sedation recovery standards.
  • Conduct sedation scoring, ongoing monitoring, and patient education.
  • Complete thorough recovery charting and ensure safe discharge readiness.
  • Circulate bronchoscopy cases and assist anesthesia with sedation and medication administration.
  • Manage specimen collection, counts, and detailed charting throughout the procedure.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure readiness of the bronchoscopy suite.
  • Participate in call responsibilities as part of the department schedule.
  • Expected call participation includes: Two 24-hour weekend call shifts within a six-week schedule period (serving in either the tech or circulating role). Four weekday call shifts following daily production within a six-week period.
