About The Position

This position is for a Medical-Surgical/Progressive Care Unit (MS/PCU) Registered Nurse. The role focuses on caring for various patient types including those with respiratory failure, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, bariatric post-operative care, diabetes management, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and acute skilled nursing facility patients. The unit offers strong support staff, including a charge nurse, SWAT nurse for specialized procedures, 24/7 Respiratory Therapy, 24/7 Hospitalist services, and on-site phlebotomy. Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy are available during the day shift. The charting system used is EPIC, and orientation includes hospital modules and a 12-hour unit-specific orientation with a preceptor. Traveler telemetry competency is required before starting. The work environment is described as welcoming and traveler-friendly, with free parking and a requirement for bedside handoff and whiteboard updates at each shift change.

Requirements

  • 1 year of experience in PCU
  • Telemetry experience
  • CIWA (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment) proficiency
  • BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) experience
  • Central line maintenance/management skills
  • Tube/drain management skills
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills
  • IV administration skills
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Traveler Telemetry Competency

Responsibilities

  • Provide care for patients with respiratory failure, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, bariatric post-operative care, diabetes management, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and acute skilled nursing facility patients.
  • Perform telemetry monitoring and interpretation.
  • Administer CIWA assessments.
  • Manage patients on BiPAP.
  • Perform central line maintenance and management.
  • Manage tubes and drains.
  • Administer IV medications.
  • Perform bedside handoff at each shift change.
  • Update the whiteboard at each shift change.
