The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room (OR) utilizes the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate the delivery of nursing care to patients and their families. This role involves maintaining competency reflective of current standards of practice, interacting and contributing to the professional development of peers and colleagues, and integrating ethical provisions and evidence-based practice into nursing care. The RN will recognize and adjust to situations that vary from the norm, promote safety measures to prevent patient and staff injuries, and guide and supervise staff in patient care. Enhancing one's own professional growth and development, maintaining a safe therapeutic working environment, and recognizing the need for action in emergency situations are also key aspects of this position. Thorough and timely documentation, assisting in patient positioning and safety, ensuring accurate care and handling of specimens, and observing and enforcing strict standards of asepsis are crucial. The RN will also observe, check, and monitor all equipment used during surgery to confirm proper functioning, document intraoperatively in Epic, conduct appropriate surgical counts, and select and handle instruments and supplies, passing them to the surgeon.
