About The Position

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking an OR Registered Nurse to provide direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. The role addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. The nurse will communicate with the surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition, and assist with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Participation in performance improvement activities is expected. The Registered Nurse will assess the operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtain supplies for individual cases, and ensure all appropriate needs of the surgical operating team are met. Responsibilities include monitoring, positioning, and assisting the patient during the procedure. Clients served are predominately adults eighteen (18) years of age and older, with occasional adolescence, pediatrics, and infants seen.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Current ACLS and PALS Certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience in the operating room.
  • Special training and/or experience in surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Use surgical checklist and patient interview to make initial patient assessment.
  • Reduce patient anxiety by explaining all procedures thoroughly in a calm and reassuring manner.
  • Assess patient knowledge regarding procedure.
  • Maintain room in state of readiness for procedure(s).
  • Transport patient by appropriate safe mode according to patient needs.
  • Position patient ensuring safety and proper body alignment.
  • Drape patient in a manner, which adequately exposes the site, but ensures patient privacy.
  • Maintain a controlled environment.
  • Assist physician within the standards of nursing practice set forth by the State Board of Nursing.
  • Perform nursing actions consistent with established policies and procedures when providing direct/indirect patient care.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with patient.
  • Monitor patient’s condition and maintain accurate documentation, pre-procedure, during procedure and post-procedure.
  • Handle specimens appropriately and label correctly.
  • Use time, effort and material economically when implementing nursing actions.
  • Communicate pertinent information within appropriate time span to healthcare team.
  • Maintain instruments and equipment and report when malfunctioning is noted.
  • Understand role/responsibilities in Emergency Action Plans and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patient and self.
  • Assist with admission and discharge of patient in Surgery Unit.
  • Prioritize daily activities according to Surgery Department needs.
  • Evaluate patient care notifying Charge Nurse of information received from physician and patient.
  • Supervise scheduling for surgical procedures.
  • Assist with training of new surgical staff.
  • Maintain appropriate statistics/records.
  • Assist with Quality Assurance program, pertinent to Surgical Department.
