About The Position

The Registered Nurse Operating Room Circulator is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical patient. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of nursing standards, department policies, and regulatory requirements such as the Patient Bill of Rights and AAAHC regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an associate's degree from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse License - IL
  • Current American Heart Assn. BLS, PALS and ACLS certifications
  • Two years of operating room circulating experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center

Responsibilities

  • Assess physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
  • Assess pain per policy.
  • Complete patient history.
  • Verbally report pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care.
  • Legibly document information in patient records and sign with appropriate professional title.
  • Assess patient/family understanding and expectations of care.
  • Identify desired patient outcomes.
  • Establish nursing diagnoses.
  • Establish mutually acceptable patient/family goals.
  • Formulate a Plan of Care for the patient.
  • Implement nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs.
  • Assess and problem-solve effectively.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Practice within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, Policy and Procedures).
  • Perform nursing actions demonstrating accountability, flexibility, and safe judgment.
  • Continually adjust care plan based on patient/family data.
  • Demonstrate proper preoperative process, including communication and report.
  • Demonstrate proper procedure and documentation for surgical case counting.
  • Demonstrate proper aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrate efficient turnover time.
  • Demonstrate proper technique for obtaining blood products.
  • Demonstrate proper patient identification verification per policy.
  • Demonstrate proper surgical site identification and marking per policy.
  • Anticipate surgeon’s needs during surgical procedures.
