About The Position

The Acute Neuroscience Trauma unit is the primary unit for neurology and neurosurgery patients, offering acute and progressive care. As a Level I Trauma Center and Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center of Excellence, the unit serves patients with brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes, seizures, and various movement disorders. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this fast-paced, high acuity unit where they will gain knowledge in the care of patients with lumbar drains, stable ventilators, tracheostomies, complex wounds, and post-operative care. The unit collaborates with other services to provide safe, patient-centered care and boasts a highly engaged nurse resiliency team and strong teamwork. The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assists the healthcare team with illness/injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. This role provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. It involves delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan, and safely administering medications while identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applies knowledge to specific patient populations, recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources to meet patient/family needs, and assumes leadership responsibilities. The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level, anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, and serves as a role model. All clinical nurse levels deliver and document direct, age-specific care and safely administer medications.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
  • Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
  • Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
  • All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin I)
  • Academic Health Care Experience; Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin II, Clin III)
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (for Clin I, Clin II, Clin III)
  • Certification in specialty area (for Clin III)

  • Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.
  • Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.
  • Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
