Registered Nurse - Medical Intensive Care Unit
About The Position
This role involves collaborating with physicians to develop and implement patient care plans aimed at optimizing patient health. The Registered Nurse provides direct bedside care, executes medical orders, and oversees the work of nursing assistants and other support staff. Key responsibilities include evaluating the effectiveness of care plans, delegating tasks, and coordinating patient discharge or transfer needs. The position also emphasizes professional growth through continuous education and mentorship of new staff and students. In the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the nurse will manage critical care patients, including those with hemodynamic and respiratory instability requiring mechanical ventilation, and administer high-risk medications. Active participation in unit quality initiatives and the incorporation of evidence-based practice are also essential.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice in the state of Michigan.
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross
- Must satisfactorily complete ACLS course and Critical Care course within one year of hire/transfer
- Must satisfactorily complete first available Basic Dysrhythmia course

Responsibilities
- Collaborates with physician to provide a plan of care that will return the patient to optimal health.
- Provides bedside nursing care and carries out medical orders.
- Delegates to and oversees Nurse Assistant, Patient Care Associate, OB Care Associate, Surgical Service Assistant, Nursing Clerk and Psychiatric Tech functions.
- Responsible for evaluating effectiveness of care plan.
- Integrates evidence-based knowledge into practice.
- Delegation and coordination of tasks and assignments of nursing care.
- Facilitates/participates in patient conferences.
- Identifies and provides the means to meet patients’ ongoing and discharge/transfer teaching needs by communicating with the appropriate resource persons and attending discharge/transfer planning conferences.
- Assumes the responsibility for professional growth by seeking out educational opportunities and utilizing programs in the hospital or elsewhere in the community.
- Teaches and/or guides professional and ancillary personnel.
- Precepts/mentors new employees and students.
- Functions as a team leader to ensure proper patient placement and delegation of assignments.
- Effectively manages the critical care of the patient with hemodynamic monitoring.
- Accurately and effectively administers high risk medications.
- Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with hemodynamic instability.
- Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with respiratory instability including mechanical ventilation.
- Actively participates in unit quality measures.
- Incorporates Evidence Based Practice in patient care.
- Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
