The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with the department’s requirements and the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. Working with medical providers and other care-team members, the RN provides individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate care using established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage.” The RN advocates for patients, families, and caregivers and supports the organization’s mission, vision, and values, patient experience, clinical outcomes, and departmental performance. The role includes performing procedures and monitoring or other functions as ordered by medical providers; documenting care in the patient medical record promptly and thoroughly; and teaching patients, families, and caregivers about medical conditions, status, treatment plans, medications and possible side effects, and follow-up measures. The RN translates complex medical terminology, provides education about non-medicinal follow-up measures such as healthy diet, exercise, disease prevention, and lifestyle changes, and prepares patients and caregivers for future self-management. The RN also manages evidence-based practices and continuous process improvement initiatives and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate, evaluate, customize, and deliver holistic treatment plans that promote recovery.
