About The Position

The County of Riverside's Riverside University Health System, (RUHS), is currently recruiting for an experienced Throughput Nurse for the Nurse Staffing Administration. The essential duties of this position, includes, but are not limited to, serving as a hospital-wide resource focused on optimizing patient flow, reducing delays in transitions of care, and facilitating timely admissions, transfers, and discharges through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and collaborating with the Throughput Team, inpatient units, providers, case management, and ancillary departments to support efficient patient movement and identify barriers impacting patient progression. Additionally, the Throughput Nurse will provide support for hospital capacity management, (including bed placement coordination, discharge processes, and escalation of throughput barriers), operate within the Throughput Command Center to support real-time patient flow coordination, and provide clinical support for the Clinical Decision Unit, (CDU), (including meal and rest break relief as needed). The Throughput Nurse will also assist with coordination and management of the Multi-Treatment Dialysis Center. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, prioritization skills, and the ability to work independently in a dynamic hospital environment while managing competing priorities and coordinating complex patient flow needs. Additionally, he/she will possess at least two (2) years of Registered Nurse experience, (preferably as an ICU or PCU Registered Nurse), and one (1) year of Charge Nurse experience. Please note, two (2) years of Charge Nurse experience is preferred.

Requirements

  • A current and valid Registered Nurse License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • A current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • A current and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • A current and valid National Institute of Health Stroke Scale, (NIHSS), issued by the American Heart Association, Blue Cloud-National Stroke Association, or Apex.
  • Equivalent to three years of full time experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care facility or community health agency with references and evaluations to show appropriate skill level.
  • Knowledge of current principles, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology and patient care routine appropriate to clinical setting; medical instruments and equipment; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; community resources available to provide patient care and follow-up; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing professional aspects of nursing; identification of potential discharge needs; payor source documentation requirements and governmental regulations affecting reimbursement.
  • Ability to perform the full range of nursing duties and responsibilities in a patient care setting; plan and organize nursing plans for patients; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and effective working relationships with physicians, patients and fellow employees; secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together; assist in the instruction of entry-level nurses and ancillary personnel; keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization; evaluate the medical records of hospital admissions; make recommendations regarding continued stay necessity; identify discharge needs.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a health-related field may be required for some positions.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a national certification in a nursing specialty may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment, planning, organization, and coordination of hospital-wide patient flow activities.
  • Facilitation of timely admissions, transfers, discharges, and transitions of care.
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to identify, communicate, and resolve barriers impacting patient progression.
  • Support of inpatient units with discharge and admission processes.
  • Bed placement and capacity management utilizing clinical judgment and prioritization.
  • Facilitation of daily discharge and throughput huddles.
  • Real-time coordination within the Throughput Command Center.
  • CDU coverage, including meal and rest break relief as needed.
  • Multi-Treatment Dialysis Center coordination and management.
  • Participation in quality improvement initiatives, data review, process improvement, and education related to throughput workflows.
  • Floating to various units to assist with duties as assigned.
