About The Position

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a licensed professional who renders direct patient care as part of the perioperative role by functioning as a first assistant to the surgeon. The RNFA practices an expanded role of perioperative nursing and has acquired knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The RNFA practices under the supervision of the surgeon in the Operating Room and Labor and Delivery Suite as a First Assistant. The RNFA will also function as a Perioperative Registered Nurse when required by departmental staffing needs and will provide patient care in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Enloe Medical Center. The Registered Nurse prioritizes patient needs, coordinates patient care, and collaborates with other members of the patient care team to provide care in accordance with the medical plan of care.

Requirements

  • Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Current CPR
  • Current ACLS recognition
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR)
  • Two years current/recent perioperative experience
  • Technical competence
  • Professional clinical judgment
  • Communication skills
  • Sensitivity for the patient and family in crisis
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively communicate with physicians, staff, patients and the public
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment while remaining calm, efficient and focused
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to perform proficiently at intermediate and advanced levels

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a Nursing/Health/Biological field
  • PALS within 1 year of employment
  • Credentialed through the Enloe Medical Staff office

Responsibilities

  • Functioning as a first assistant to the surgeon.
  • Assisting the surgeon in the Operating Room and Labor and Delivery Suite.
  • Providing patient care in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Enloe Medical Center.
  • Prioritizing patient needs.
  • Coordinating patient care.
  • Collaborating with other members of the patient care team.
  • Actively participating in continuing education programs and unit-based QI task forces.
  • Performing as a preceptor in the training of students.
  • Acting as a department resource and a positive role model.
  • Meeting competency requirements.
