About The Position

The Extended Recovery Unit Nurse provides safe, high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and procedural interventions. This role is responsible for comprehensive postoperative assessment, continuous monitoring, pain management, medication administration, and coordination of care from Phase II recovery through discharge or transfer to inpatient units. The Extended Recovery Nurse collaborates with anesthesia providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to identify changes in patient condition, implement timely interventions, and ensure safe patient transitions. The nurse delivers care in accordance with established clinical standards, promotes patient safety, and provides education to patients and caregivers to support optimal recovery outcomes.

Requirements

  • 1 year of perioperative or related experience, with a focus on PACU.
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Arizona Registered Nurse License or a Registered Nurse License form a Compact State.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification- An approved American Heart Association (AHA) training site, American Safety & Health Institute, or Red Cross BLS certification is required upon hire and renewal every two years. If their current certification does not meet the guidelines, employees will have (30) days from the date of hire to attend an onsite initial BLS course and will be required to renew every two years.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification-Employees will have thirty (30) days from the date of hire to acquire American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS certification and will need to be renewed every two years. Will not be allowed to provide ACLS for patients independently until AHA ACLS cards are obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct post‑operative nursing care for extended recovery patients, including safe recovery and continuous monitoring of Phase II patients to extended recovery to discharge.
  • Performs comprehensive postoperative assessments; assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents care with emphasis on neurological, cardiac, respiratory, hemodynamic, and pain status.
  • Administers medications and pain management per physician orders and hospital protocols using the “6 Rights,” barcode medication scanning, and vigilant monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects.
  • Manages care of patients with complex devices; utilizes less‑invasive life‑support modalities (e.g., BiPAP, ETCO₂); facilitates safe patient transitions and discharges; collaborates with interdisciplinary teams; communicates changes in patient condition to the anesthesia provider and other necessary ancillary support teams; provides patient and caregiver education and validates understanding of instructions; and adheres to all safety, fire prevention, and organizational policies.
  • Interprets and operates cardiac and non‑invasive monitoring systems; recognizes abnormal rhythms and trends; completes ECG education requirements and initiates appropriate clinical interventions.
  • Initiates, manages, and maintains IV therapies (peripheral and central access); safely administers and monitors blood products; collects blood specimens using aseptic technique.
  • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
