The Extended Recovery Unit Nurse provides safe, high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and procedural interventions. This role involves comprehensive postoperative assessment, continuous monitoring, pain management, medication administration, and care coordination from Phase II recovery through discharge or transfer. The nurse collaborates with anesthesia providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to identify patient condition changes, implement timely interventions, and ensure safe patient transitions, delivering care according to clinical standards, promoting safety, and educating patients and caregivers for optimal recovery.

Requirements

  • 1 year of perioperative or related experience, with a focus on PACU.
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Arizona Registered Nurse License or a Registered Nurse License from a Compact State.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - An approved American Heart Association (AHA) training site, American Safety & Health Institute, or Red Cross BLS certification is required upon hire and renewal every two years. If current certification does not meet guidelines, employees will have (30) days from date of hire to attend an onsite initial BLS course and will be required to renew every two years.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification - Employees will have thirty (30) days from the date of hire to acquire American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS certification and will need to be renewed every two years. Will not be allowed to provide ACLS for patients independently until AHA ACLS cards are obtained.

Responsibilities

  • Work 1 12 hour shift per week, 10:30a-11:00p, with no call requirement.
  • Provide direct post‑operative nursing care for extended recovery patients, including safe recovery and continuous monitoring of Phase II patients to extended recovery to discharge.
  • Perform comprehensive postoperative assessments; assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document care with emphasis on neurological, cardiac, respiratory, hemodynamic, and pain status.
  • Administer medications and pain management per physician orders and hospital protocols using the “6 Rights,” barcode medication scanning, and vigilant monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects.
  • Manage care of patients with complex devices; utilize less‑invasive life‑support modalities (e.g., BiPAP, ETCO₂); facilitate safe patient transitions and discharges.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams; communicate changes in patient condition to the anesthesia provider and other necessary ancillary support teams.
  • Provide patient and caregiver education and validate understanding of instructions.
  • Adhere to all safety, fire prevention, and organizational policies.
  • Interpret and operate cardiac and non‑invasive monitoring systems; recognize abnormal rhythms and trends; complete ECG education requirements and initiate appropriate clinical interventions.
  • Initiate, manage, and maintain IV therapies (peripheral and central access); safely administer and monitor blood products; collect blood specimens using aseptic technique.
  • Follow established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.
  • Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
