The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgment to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high-intensity interventions, and high-level continuous nursing vigilance. This role utilizes information and assessment data to anticipate and respond with confidence, adapting to rapidly changing patient conditions. The nurse identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate and decisive evidence-based, patient-focused action. Responsibilities include monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment, interpreting electronic displays, and responding to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocol. The nurse observes, monitors, and assesses patients’ conditions, recognizing and interpreting serious situations, and calling a Physician or taking preplanned emergency measures when a Physician is not immediately available. They assess patient needs, develop/revise individualized plans of care, and evaluate patient progress. The role also involves functioning as a patient and family advocate, serving as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, and/or nurse clinician, and communicating and collaborating with medical staff and the interdisciplinary team. The nurse acts as a role model, supports hospital and nursing department goals, and demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles. They coordinate care, delegate appropriately, and document patient care accurately. Competency in nursing skills and equipment use is essential, as is prioritizing patient care based on Evidence-Based Practice Standards of Care. The nurse practices effective problem identification and resolution, delegates tasks appropriately, and communicates necessary information to team members. They demonstrate caring practices, awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights, and collaborate with the education department and nursing leadership. Maintaining regular attendance and compliance with policies is required. Additionally, the professional nurse contributes to knowledge and skills of others, participates in committees, peer review, mentoring, and coaching. They practice efficient use of supplies, maintain a clean work area, attend meetings, and partner with leadership for professional development. The nurse assumes responsibility for their own professional development and continuing education.
