This 25-bed gastrointestinal/medical unit primarily provides care to persons with medical GI disorders that include: GI bleeding, liver failure, hepatobiliary dysfunction, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, nurses on DO6D may care for patients receiving home parenteral nutrition. Many patients present with multiple comorbidities; complex discharge planning is often required to return these patients to the community. Nurses on DO6D are specially educated to teach and care for patients. An emphasis on discharge planning and patient education is required to meet the special needs of those patients with chronic illnesses. A holistic nursing approach is used to meet the needs of this diverse patient population.
