About The Position

The Mental Health Program in partnership with the Emergency Department is seeking nurses to support patient care and access to services. The successful candidate will perform mental health and risk assessments, provide one-to-one supportive therapy and medical care, and perform the full scope of nursing care according to the College of Nurses Practice Standards. The BAS nurse will report to the Manager of Mental Health and work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, inpatient programs, other hospital services, and community agencies.

Requirements

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current BCLS Certification required at time of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience in acute mental health required.
  • Minimum of 1 years of psychiatric emergency/crisis experience required.
  • Advanced skill in the assessment and management of acute mental health and concurrent disorders conditions, including mental status examination, suicide risk assessment, management of aggressive behaviour, bio-psychosocial assessment, physical health assessment, treatment and transitional care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable health care legislations.
  • Must provide availability of a 0.20 FTE.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
  • Mental health community experience preferred.
  • Additional experience in addictions and/or medical/surgical or emergency nursing would be considered an asset.
  • CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing or Post-Diploma Mental Health Nursing preferred, or completion within 2 years of start date required.
  • Current certification in non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform charge nurse duties preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with complex and difficult patient and family situations.
  • Physical ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of aggressive behaviour.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, with the ability to type notes and utilize the electronic health record.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, time management, professionalism, and ability to work as part of team.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record required.
