The Oncology Registered Nurse oversees and directs care for patients with hematologic and oncologic diagnoses, including medical and surgical patients. The RN serves as the primary nurse, coordinating collaboration among disciplines to support well-coordinated patient care, and oversees assistive personnel while retaining final accountability for care provided to assigned patients. Within the first year, the RN is expected to gain basic clinical knowledge and skills in caring for hematology/oncology patients. The RN may perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor. The role supports Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center’s mission to improve quality of life by addressing the needs of the whole person. Nurses deliver care based on each oncology patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety, and learning needs; demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the patient population; and provide safe, appropriate care consistent with the organization’s Values and Standards of Nursing Practice. Nurses are encouraged to contribute to decisions affecting patient care through collaboration with their managers, hospital councils, and national nursing initiatives.
