The Miami VA Healthcare System's parent facility, the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center, is located on 26 acres in the Miami Civic Center Medical Complex. The Miami VA Healthcare System is an accredited comprehensive medical provider, providing general medical, surgical, inpatient, and outpatient mental health services. The Miami VA Healthcare System includes an AIDS/HIV center, a prosthetic treatment center, a spinal cord injury rehabilitative center, and a Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). The Miami VA Healthcare System is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Spinal Cord Injury Research, Substance Abuse Treatment, and is a recognized Chest Pain Center. The Miami VA Healthcare System operates 372 hospital beds, including a four-story community living center attached to the main facility. The Miami VA is also responsible for two major satellite Outpatient Clinics in Broward County and Key West and five Community-Based Outpatient Clinics in Homestead, Key Largo, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, and Deerfield Beach. The Mental Health Unit is a locked unit comprised of beds for inpatient psychiatry treatment. The patients in this unit carry various psychiatric diagnoses including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and cognitive impairment such as dementia. Many patients may be under involuntary and/or court ordered admissions.
