About The Position

The Registered Early Childhood Educator/Early Years Educator will work in both our EarlyON and School Readiness Programs, in a blended position. EarlyON programming will be high quality, welcoming, inclusive, integrated, and community led. EarlyON services must be delivered within the context of the Mandatory Core Services: Engaging Parent and Caregivers, Supporting Early Learning and Development, and Making Connections for Families. School Readiness is a licensed program aimed at improving the developmental readiness for children to enter Kindergarten. Both EarlyON and School Readiness programming will be delivered within the context of the Provincial Pedagogical Framework, including How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years, and in accordance with the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Requirements

• College diploma in either Early Childhood Education or Native Early Childhood Education with one-year relevant experience OR minimum 5 years equivalent experience in the early years field.
• Current member in good standing of the College of Early Childhood Educators.
• Knowledge of parenting issues and experience working with families in a community setting.
• Familiar with and experience using Pedagogical approach with the Elect curriculum.
• Strong understanding of the strengths and challenges of Kingston families, including parenting in communities facing barriers to health.
• Strong knowledge of Indigenous culture; including cultural competency and governance.
• Skills with time management, organization, conflict resolution and multi-tasking.
• Superior interpersonal skills, and a commitment to being a team player.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and relevant software applications.
• Awareness of, an ability to support, provincial and federal privacy regulations.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement.
• Access to a vehicle as this position has multiple locations of work throughout Kingston.
• Valid Driver’s Licence, Driver’s Abstract and proof of vehicle liability insurance as this is a requirement under KCHC’s insurance provider (HIROC).
• Ability to work outside normal business hours including regular weekend or evening work. Work during both regular and extended hours in locations identified by KCHC.
• Ability to attend work regularly and meet the physical demand of the position.
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification or willing to obtain.
• Up to date immunizations and TB test.
• Current and satisfactory Criminal and Vulnerable Persons Check.
• As a registered professional, to abide by and be accountable to the ethics and standards set out by the relevant regulatory body of the profession. All KCHC staff have a duty to understand and follow KCHC policies, uphold high ethical and professional standards, and maintain confidentiality and privacy, using tact and good judgment in all dealings with other staff and clients.

Responsibilities

• Design, promote, deliver, and evaluate high quality programs for children and families, guided by How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years and the provincial pedagogical framework.
• Provide full delivery of programs, including, but not limited to, the preparation and provision of healthy snacks, maintain a clean and safe program environment, performing administrative duties such as maintaining program records.
• Offer individual support to parents and children through supportive listening, crisis support, resources, identification of health challenges, and referrals to specialists or other available services.
• Work with colleagues and other community networks to identify community and systemic issues associated with quality-of-life as identified by community residents, and to design and implement relevant community development strategies.
• Participate in the development, promotion, implementation and evaluation of a high-quality licensed school readiness program.
• Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum including self regulation and resiliency building activities for child.
• Assess children’s social, physical, emotional, cognitive and language learning needs and plan activities to address those needs in both group and individual settings.
• Provide an inclusive environment with specific planning for children with varying degrees of development.
• Create an optimal learning environment by fostering the elect foundations of learning.
• Refer to and attend transition to kindergarten meeting with families to ensure supports for success are in place when children start school.
• Provide health promotion and child development information on a variety of topics including self-regulation, child development, behaviour and nutrition.
• Identify children who may have developmental challenges and work with parents to refer them to appropriate specialists, follow –up with and support families to attend appointments.
• Keep parents informed of their children’s progress and maintain records of contacts.
• Act as a resource and advocate for families.
• Register children/families for program.
• Maintain accurate program/licencing records.
• Maintain stimulating, safe and hygienic program rooms.
• Maintain toys and equipment.
• Maintain Childcare Act standards as per Ministry requirements.
• Comply with all relevant legislation and KCHC policies, including privacy laws.
• Commits to acquiring an understanding of the importance of trauma responsiveness and the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
• Commits to demonstrating an ongoing commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigenization and Accessibility (EDIIA) by representing the diverse nature of our communities, promoting and practicing inclusion.
• Supports consistent application and development of KCHC policies and procedures.
• Supports KCHC’s student and volunteer placement programs.

• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement.
• On occasion, perform other temporary duties as required.
