About The Position

This part-time position (32 hours/week) is responsible for providing nutrition assessment and direct nutritional educational services to WIC participants. Assists in development and implementation of the WIC nutritional education plan.

Requirements

  • Licensed/Registered Dietician in good standing.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college institution with a major course of study in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or food service management approved by the Secretary as meeting the standards for approval of such course of study.
  • Completion of a planned, continuous program of dietetic experience approved by the Secretary of at least 900 clock hours under the supervision of a licensed dietitian.
  • The Registered Dietitian (RD) examination established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), or another examination approved by the Secretary.
  • Knowledge of the principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and dietary assessment techniques including anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary.
  • Knowledge of the interrelationships between health and social service programs and appropriate community resources.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effecting change.
  • Knowledge of regulations to maintain preparedness and public health competencies.
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the County.
  • Knowledge of community resources, and alternative care resources.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements including privacy, confidentiality, and non-discrimination.
  • Knowledge of the County and Department’s operating requirements, policies, procedures, and practices; and local, State, and Federal regulations related to department programs and operations.
  • Knowledge of current office practices and procedures consistent for this position.
  • Knowledge of computer software including consistent for this position.
  • Skill in analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures, and techniques for resolution of issues.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Skill in researching and understanding complex written materials.
  • Ability to interpret nutritional and dietary data.
  • Ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports.
  • Ability and skill to relate to clients in stressful or crisis situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical information and assure rights and privacy are protected at all times per HIPAA.
  • Ability to research and analyze detailed information and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to interpret, and implement regulations, policies, procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and other department-specific documents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses clients for nutritional counseling needs and provides nutrition counseling.
  • Determines and prescribes WIC food package and breast pumps based upon assessed needs.
  • Documents assessment and services provided.
  • Completes nutrition assessments and provides nutrition counseling as needed for participants of departmental programs.
  • Documents care provided.
  • Communicates nutrition care provided to clients' care coordinators within confidentiality policies.
  • Refers clients according to assessment to other public health programs or community resources within confidentiality policies.
  • Prepares related documents.
  • Issues WIC benefits, weighing and measuring infants/children, performing finger or heel stick blood draws, scheduling, determining client income, etc., as required.
  • Conducts nutrition high-risk counseling.
  • Implements tracking systems for high-risk participants.
  • Develops nutrition education materials needed for departmental programs and services.
  • In conjunction with the Community Health Nurse -WIC staff, develops and interprets health department and nutrition policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Monitors compliance with WIC and health department policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all local policies and procedures are compliant with State Policy and Procedure Manual, and the terms of the WIC contract.
  • Provides for positive publicity and the effective distribution of WIC outreach materials.
  • Assists the community in understanding the goals and objectives of the WIC Program.
  • Helps disseminate through statistics and non-specific case histories, information that highlights the success of the WIC program in the community.
  • Develops and interprets health department and nutrition policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Provides surge capacity to Public Health Emergency and Epidemiology for investigative work and community containment in a public health emergency or severe outbreak.
  • Other duties as assigned.
