This role is responsible for ensuring the facility operates within applicable environmental rules and regulations, providing oversight and support in addressing all regulatory matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering, or physical science with a strong emphasis in chemistry.
  • 8-10 years’ experience.
  • At least one year’s supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience acquiring environmental permits.
  • Experience conducting negotiations with regulatory agencies.
  • Experience supervising consultant activities.
  • Fundamental understanding of major federal environmental regulations/programs.
  • Detailed/practical experience based knowledge in at least one key environmental program area (i.e. RCRA, air permitting, UST, remediation, etc.).
  • Must be legally eligible to immediately work in the country of hire without current or future sponsorship.

  • Experience with ISO14001.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the facility operates within applicable environmental rules and regulations.
  • Ensure Environmental Plans and Permits are current and appropriate for the division.
  • Oversee the Environmental Management System (example, ISO14001).
  • Management Representative of the Environmental Management System for the division.
  • Acquiring or maintaining licenses required to execute job functions or compliance requirements.
  • Maintain and audit compliance with applicable environmental rules and regulations and uphold environmental policies.
  • Provide a direct oversight and assistance in addressing all regulatory matters (i.e. agency liaison, permitting, reporting, resolving regulatory issues, training, lobbying, and scientific investigations).
  • Direct appropriate environmental studies/consultants to ensure that environmental and regulatory issues are addressed in a cost-effective manner.
  • Identify/report serious division environmental program deficiencies to the General Plant Manager so that environmental issues may be promptly addressed.
  • Monitor the state legislative activities to ensure Gerdau Special Steel, Monroe Mill participates in the development of emerging regulations that could impact division operations.
  • Provide expertise as needed in special areas such as source testing, air toxics, PSD, New Source Review, etc., to minimize staff consultant time addressing easily resolvable matters.
  • Responsible for managing the environmental budget, including waste disposal, fees, sampling and analysis, professional fees, etc. and meeting the EMM goals.
  • Manage support activities of contractors and consultants executing the environmental management systems.
  • Develop and implement a mechanism to effectively promote environmental awareness at the facility.
  • Responsible for ensuring environmental compliance with all applicable federal, state, local regulations and EMS System.
  • Responsible to know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.
  • Responsible for and completing all required annual safety and environmental training.
  • Responsible following the Cardinal Safety Rules.
  • Responsible for utilizing Gerdau Business Systems concepts.
