About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented professional to lead and coordinate environmental compliance for Region Two. In this role, you will administer UDOT’s responsibilities under state and federal laws—including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)—ensuring all regional activities align with agency policies, environmental regulations, and project goals. As the Region Environmental Manager, you will provide vital environmental oversight and support to Region Two’s Preconstruction, Construction, and Maintenance divisions. This role requires a broad working knowledge of diverse environmental resources (e.g., cultural assets, wildlife, wetlands, air quality, and noise impacts). To thrive in this position, you must be a collaborative team player, an exceptional communicator (written and verbal), and an agile project manager capable of balancing multiple evolving priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution in environmental science, an environmental resource specific area (i.e. wildlife biology or archeology), or another closely related field AND at least four (4) years of professional experience working with environmental regulations or other relevant experience.
  • Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis (e.g., 8 years of total related experience if no degree is held).

  • An advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant environmental field.
  • Proven experience managing environmental compliance specifically for transportation and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Identify potentially affected environmental resources, perform rigorous impact analyses, and prepare comprehensive supporting documentation.
  • Secure necessary environmental permits and author/review Categorical Exclusions (CEs) and State Environmental Studies (SES).
  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary project teams and provide strategic oversight to staff specialists and external consultants.
  • Attend critical project meetings to deliver expert environmental guidance and risk-mitigation strategies to Project Managers.
  • Schedule, lead, and participate in public hearings, community meetings, and regulatory agency coordination.
