About The Position

The Refuse Collector collects backdoor and curbside solid waste from residential and commercial establishments. The role may also involve collecting litter along streets and roadways, cutting grass and weeds, removing waste from refuse vehicles, and helping unload refuse at an incinerator plant or designated landfill. Work is primarily outdoors and involves physically demanding collection and disposal tasks, riding in refuse collection vehicles, and helping clean and service those vehicles. Local travel between locations and job sites is required. Work hours may be irregular due to seasonal conditions.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks.
• No previous training or experience is required.
• Ability to frequently stand and walk, including long distances and on sloped, slippery, or uneven surfaces.
• Manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity, and arm-hand steadiness to use hand and power tools and operate equipment; ability to use feet to operate equipment control pedals.
• Ability to reach and lift arms above the shoulder; lift material weighing over 100 pounds with assistance; and bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch.
• Corrected hearing and vision within the normal range and verbal communication ability.
• Ability to wear safety and protective clothing, including hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, ear plugs, respirators, gloves, boots, and chemical-resistant clothing.
• Ability to use heavy power-driven maintenance equipment, including tracked hydraulic excavators, backhoes, graders, and front-end loaders, as well as hand tools, chainsaws, grinders, drill presses, and jackhammers.

Responsibilities

• Collect backdoor and curbside solid waste from residential and commercial establishments.
• Collect litter along street and roadway edges, cut grass and weeds, and remove waste from refuse vehicles as needed.
• Ride a refuse collection vehicle to and from work sites.
• Walk at a fast pace between refuse pickup points and lift, carry, and dump filled City containers into the vehicle.
• Lift, carry, and dump curbside trash, branches and limbs, cut grass, leaves, dead animals, and other refuse and litter.
• Help remove vehicle contents at an incinerator plant or designated landfill.
• Help clean and service refuse collection vehicles.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.
• Travel locally between locations and job sites to complete assignments.
