About The Position

The Referral Specialist is responsible to execute patient referrals as indicated by physicians, seek authorization as required by individual insurances and notify patients. This role acts as a liaison between hospitals, physicians, health plans, vendors, and patients, or other referral sources. The position also involves covering other roles such as New Patient Coordinator, Non-oncology referral coordinator, HIM, VA authorizations and phones as needed. The Referral Specialist is expected to promote the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abide by service behavior standards.

Requirements

• One year front office or revenue cycle experience in a health care organization.
• One year of customer service.
• One year of Microsoft Suite.

Responsibilities

• Obtains referral request from physician.
• Verifies insurance coverage or lack thereof for patient. Obtains authorizations if needed from insurance coverage.
• Gathers all records necessary for incoming or outgoing referral requests.
• Gathers pertinent information from insurance carriers, financial counselors, and other ancillary staff to make certain the patient's financial obligations for services provided.
• Completes referral paperwork, including copies, and fax to medical office.
• Contacts patient regarding referral information and give name, location, telephone number of specialist.
• Acts as a liaison between hospitals, physicians, health plans, vendors, and patients, or other referral sources.
• Covers New Patient Coordinator, Non-oncology referral coordinator, HIM, VA authorizations and phones as needed and under the supervision of the team Leader.
• Promotes mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
