About The Position

This posting is to fill a current vacancy in the Grounds Management Division of the Parks and Recreation Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. An employee in this classification may work alone or perform as a lead worker to complete assigned tasks. Job requirements may vary dependent upon assignment; however, the Recreational Facilities Technician must possess the required license and/or certification and two or more journeyman-level skills associated with the specified departmental or divisional job requirements and identified as essential functions of the position prior to assuming the duties of this position. Essential job functions include: installing, inspecting, monitoring, and maintaining new or existing recreational equipment and facilities in compliance with regulatory and department requirements; performing journey-level carpentry; masonry/concrete finishing; painting; or welding duties. Other duties include: assuming full responsibility for following all procedures related to work safety and equipment inspection and maintenance, following both written and verbal instructions, carrying out assignments independently or as a member of a crew, and completing work orders, safety reports, and other work-related records or reports on a daily basis. The employee must exhibit tact and diplomacy in communication with citizens, contractors, co-workers, and other departmental personnel concerning relevant aspects of work performed. The work product is subject to inspection by the supervisor upon completion.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of recreational facility or equipment safety codes and ordinances (such as pools, spray grounds, and/or playground equipment and facilities).
  • Knowledge of and skill in following safe working procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of and skill in two or more of the required skills trades.
  • Skill in performing recreation facility and equipment safety inspections, maintenance, and repair.
  • Skill in reading and following sketches, drawings or blueprints.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to estimate material and equipment needs.
  • Ability to communicate, using tact and diplomacy, in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Willingness to assume responsibility for decisions made and work performed.
  • Willingness to follow through on work performed.
  • Possession of a valid driver license (Operator).
  • Skill in planning and completing carpentry projects.
  • Knowledge of standard carpentry materials and supplies.
  • Knowledge of and skill in operating, adjusting, and maintaining power operated carpentry tools and equipment on site and in a shop setting.
  • Knowledge of and skill in use of manually operated carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Skill in repair of damaged furniture, cabinets, walls, ceilings, doors, locks, etc.
  • Knowledge of masonry materials and skill in using masonry tools.
  • Knowledge of and skill in following procedures for finishing concrete surfaces.
  • Skill in determining proper mix and consistency of concrete.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow procedures necessary to properly pour concrete.
  • Possession of current Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach to load or unload materials and equipment.
  • Vision enough to read blueprints or drawings, to measure, and determine color variations for chemical testing, etc.
  • Stamina enough to exert oneself physically throughout the workday.
  • Mobility enough to continually move one's body from place to place.
  • Speech enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person and by two-way radio.
  • Hearing enough to understand a conversation in a noisy environment or communicate at a moderate distance.
  • Hearing enough to determine location of sounds and discriminate among various power tools and equipment sounds.
  • Balance enough to work from ladders, platforms, scaffolding, etc.
  • Arm-hand steadiness enough to use power and hand tools.
  • Near vision enough to read blueprints and drawings to measure and cut materials per specification.
  • Visual color discrimination enough to match grains of wood.
  • Balance and strength enough to remain upright when working on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Far vision enough to observe on-coming traffic.
  • Hearing enough to distinguish direction of sounds, such as moving traffic or equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Installing, inspecting, monitoring, and maintaining new or existing recreational equipment and facilities in compliance with regulatory and department requirements.

  • Performing welding duties.
