About The Position

The Recreation Therapy Associate at the Long Island State Veterans Home assists the department in providing programming that meets residents’ intellectual, emotional, and social needs. The role provides regular contact with residents through individual and group activities and contributes to comprehensive resident care. The facility is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with a 40-slot Adult Day Health Care Program serving honorably discharged U.S. Armed Forces veterans, their spouses, and Gold Star parents.

This is an essential position at a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. Employees may be required to remain at or report to work during emergencies, and pass days and shifts may change to meet facility operating needs. Working conditions may include exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, tissue, accidents, injuries, and illness; unpredictable emergency or crisis situations; and occasional irregular hours and pressure from multiple calls and inquiries or weather-related situations. The position may require respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair. The campus is tobacco-free, including parking lots and outdoor areas.

Before starting, the selected candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance, meet regulatory pre-employment screening requirements, submit three written references, and provide copies of required licenses or certificates. Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
• Certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS), or eligibility to obtain CTRS certification by passing the exam within two years.
• Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department.
• Meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screening.
• Submit three written references.
• Provide a copy of required license(s) or certificate(s).

Responsibilities

• Establish a functional recreation program with a therapeutic approach.
• Promote, plan, and carry out full recreation programs.
• Monitor and evaluate residents’ responses to program inclusion and resident safety.
• Interface with other team members to support comprehensive resident care.
• Monitor documentation in a timely manner for 60 residents.
• Maintain the supply inventory.
• Supervise volunteers.
• Attend Corporate Compliance training and adhere to Corporate Compliance Program policies and procedures.
