About The Position

Valleyview Home, a 136-bed long-term care facility owned and operated by the City of St. Thomas, is seeking a Recreation Therapist for their Adult Day Program. This permanent, part-time UNIFOR position reports directly to the Adult Day Program Supervisor. The role involves providing meaningful and innovative recreation programs designed to meet the diverse social, physical, spiritual, and cognitive needs of clients, ultimately aiming to maximize and maintain their optimum level of functioning.

Requirements

University Degree in Recreation Therapy and/or College Diploma in Recreation & Leisure Services.
One (1) to three (3) years of experience working on therapeutic programs for the cognitively impaired and frail elderly populations.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Current First Aid & CPR certificate.
Must possess and maintain a valid Class 'F' driver’s license for the Province of Ontario (or be willing and able to obtain within the first three (3) months of employment).
Able to work weekend and evening hours (if needed).

Responsibilities

Developing and implementing a variety of social and therapeutic programs.
Communicating with clients, families, and co-workers to establish individual plans of care.
Observing clients' responses to programs, assessing abilities and progress, and intervening when necessary.
Engaging clients in activities that correspond to identified needs and interests.
Developing a monthly activity calendar in cooperation with clients.
Ensuring program/activity supplies and resources are available.
Liaising with family and/or caregivers as required.
Modifying the environment to be conducive to physical, emotional, and social stimulation while maintaining client safety.
Acting as a resource person to volunteers and instructing them when necessary.
Escorting clients to and from programs in the program van.
Establishing and maintaining program records, including daily attendance logs, service plans, personal files, and daily vehicle inspection logs.
Maintaining program records to monitor participation and program effectiveness.
Promoting the Adult Day Program through a public relations role, including actively promoting the program to clients, families, and the community, and including media in special events.
Being an active member of the Adult Day Program team, supporting its mission and goals.
Ensuring adherence to policies and procedures from the Adult Day Program, Valleyview, and/or the City of St. Thomas.
Identifying gaps and communicating the need for new and expanded services.
Attending in-services and workshops for professional development.
Actively participating in monthly team meetings.
Participating in the development and implementation of fundraising projects.
Performing other duties as required.
Taking responsibility for personal health and safety in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.
