Join our team and make a meaningful difference! This position is for a Recreation Therapist at Southwood Care Centre, a permanent part-time role (0.7 FTE) with hours from 8 am - 4 pm.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Recreational Therapy from an Accredited School is required.
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience relevant to Continuing Care Services is required.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
  • Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to function as an effective team member with other Staff, Residents, Families and the Public.
  • Demonstrates concern and interest

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the implementation and monitoring of specific activities and programs to support continual quality improvement, risk management, and occupational health and safety within the department.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of departmental budgets and ensure operations remain within available material and human resources.
  • Recommend and implement changes to improve departmental efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in evaluating services provided by the Therapeutic Services Department.
  • Responsible for the provision of individual and group recreation programs based on the assessed needs of the current resident population.
  • Works with the Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Services team to develop meaningful site-wide programs.
  • Programs may include, but are not limited to the following: Re-motivation therapy, Reminiscing therapy, Social communication, Music therapy, Validation therapy, Sensory/cognitive stimulation, Reality orientation, Other therapeutic programs.
  • Adhere to professional standards of practice.
  • Complete InterRAI MDS assessment elements as appropriate for the discipline.
  • Participate in the review of triggered CAPS and the development of resident care plans consistent with the Collaborative Care Model.
  • Ensure staff for whom there is direct responsibility receive written performance appraisals as per corporate policy and collective agreements.
  • Participate in the review of position descriptions at a minimum of every three years and whenever necessary to reflect their role and the role of the staff they supervise.
  • Ensure departmental adherence to and understanding of collective agreements, in consultation with the Clinical Team Leader/Director of Care.
  • Assist in the development of departmental and corporate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, as required.
  • Serve as a mentor and facilitator to individuals within the department, directing them toward independent practice and decision‑making within a teamwork framework.
  • Ensure the provision of an environment supportive of the advancement of knowledge and the integration of that knowledge into practice to promote quality service delivery.
  • Documents care, programs, and interactions as required on the Resident’s health care record.
  • Maintains an awareness of community resource/services and facilitates access to such services, as required by site residents.
  • Liaise with educational facilities and act as a preceptor to provide opportunities for approved student placements.
  • Facilitate student placements as appropriate.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff, as required.
  • Maintains equipment and supply inventory.
  • Responsible for ensuring recreational supplies and equipment are maintained in safe working condition.
  • Facilitates repairs as required.
  • Demonstrates respect to all customers, by working with them in a calm, courteous manner.
  • Accepts responsibility for the performance results of their work teams and works in partnership with individuals and groups of employees (teams) to improve services for our customers.
  • Participate in project teams, committees, and meetings, as required.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of the Corporation, the facility, and the Therapeutic Services Department.
  • Accept responsibility for one’s own performance and actively seek learning opportunities to meet or exceed performance expectations.
  • Keeps current on issues, practices and new trends related to geriatrics and the practice of recreation therapy.
  • Participates in self‑assessment of educational needs.
  • Understand and adhere to all organizational health and safety responsibilities as outlined in the corporate Health and Safety policy.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains the work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Reports unsafe, hazardous working conditions and/or any equipment malfunctions to the appropriate person/department.
  • Participate in required health and safety training and initiatives to maintain compliance and promote workplace safety.
  • Understand and adheres to fire responsibilities as outlined in the Corporate Fire Response Manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
