About The Position

Under general direction, plans, schedules, assigns, reviews, supervises, and participates in the work of staff providing a variety of programs within the Recreation Department, including senior, adult, aquatics, and youth recreation sports, field trips, and special events. Develops, delivers, and coordinates program activities and services, and ensures facilities are operated and maintained safely and effectively. Coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies.

  • Community organizations to source and partner in the provision of recreation and community programs and services.
  • Arithmetic and statistical techniques.
  • Research methods and techniques.
  • Recent and on-going developments, current literature, and sources of information related to the operations of the assigned department.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping, technical report writing, and preparation of correspondence.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as industry standards and best practices pertinent to the assigned area of responsibility.
  • City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the delivery of sports, recreation, or community service programs.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a valid Lifesaving Certification (CPR/AED and First Aid), to be maintained throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, public administration, business administration, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, reviews, supervises, and participates in the work of staff providing a variety of programs within the Recreation Department.
  • Develops, delivers, and coordinates program activities and services.
  • Ensures facilities are operated and maintained safely and effectively.
  • Coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • Selects and supervises staff, provides training and development opportunities, ensures work is performed effectively, and evaluates performance.
  • Assists in developing and implementing goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Administers budgets; monitors revenue and expenses, as required.
  • Plans, oversees, coordinates, reviews, and evaluates sports, recreation, and community service program operations and activities, as well as staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Plans and prepares program activity schedules, staffing schedules, reports, and other related program materials.
  • Provides program services to patrons with diverse needs.
  • Coordinates services with internal departments, community organizations, and other public and private agencies.
  • Establishes program standards and evaluates performance.
  • Conducts a variety of training programs in assigned areas.
  • Performs mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Researches, analyzes, and evaluates new service delivery methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Maintains accurate records and files of work performed.
  • Understands, interprets, and applies all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Effectively represents the division and the City in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, various business, professional, and regulatory organizations, and in meetings with individuals.
  • Prepares clear and concise reports, correspondence, documentation, and other written materials.
  • Uses tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Independently organizes work, sets priorities, meets critical deadlines, and follows up on assignments.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Effectively uses computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
