Recreation Programs Supervisor
About The Position
The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Nice To Haves
- Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of Prisons operations through at least 2 years' work experience in a correctional facility.
- Documented knowledge of services available from the community and other public and private programs through work experience or personal volunteer experience.
- Documented work experience developing or supporting activities or events for a large group of individuals.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the Recreation Coordinator and is responsible for the overall recreational program for offenders in a state prison facility.
- Ensures that performance-based standards and expected practices are established and met.
- Develops, implements, and maintains the recreational program, including accountability for compliance for accreditation.
- Develops a comprehensive annual recreation plan to promote the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of the population.
- The recreation plan will include leisure activities, structured activities, special activities and recognition activities that involve both the facility and the community.
- Oversees recreational activity planning and oversight.
- Manages seasonal and holiday events.
- Handles equipment and supply purchasing, inventory and distribution.
- Evaluates recreational areas.
- Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and areas.
- Oversees library access for all offenders (books, movies).
- Coordinates plans with staff and management.
- Ensures offenders with disabilities and close custody and/or restrictive housing offenders have access to all recreational programs within their assigned restrictions.
- Coordinates with community agencies to enrich programs, establish new programs and work with community volunteers.
- Oversees staff and offenders during recreational programs but will not be responsible for an inmate caseload.
