Recreation Specialist- Elon Recreation Center
About The Position
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and passionate Recreation Specialist to join their team at the Elon Recreation Center. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing programs and services for diverse communities, including youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Program areas may encompass athletics, arts and crafts, social events, summer/day camps, outdoor nature programs, and health and wellness. The position will also deliver physical education activities for homeschool groups. This is a full-time position with a rotating schedule that includes mornings, daytime, evenings, and weekends based on business needs. Applicants may be considered for similar roles at other Park and Recreation locations if they meet the qualifications.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience includes:
- Bachelor's degree with 6 months of prior work experience as a temporary or part-time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of related experience.
- Four (4) years of similar related experience.
- Combination of relevant experience and relevant education accepted.
- Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
- Requires the ability to obtain (within one year of hire) and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
Nice To Haves
- Experience planning and executing after-school programs.
- Experience working with various athletics, such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, and/or flag football.
Responsibilities
- Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
- Provide customer service and handle funds in a recreation center or park facility via telephone, email, website, social media, and walk-in patrons for information, program registration, center daily use, and rentals.
- Ensure the safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
- Enforce rules and regulations.
- Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
- Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
- Referee at various sports activities.
- Provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or line-person at games.
- Supervise children involved in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
- Handle inquiries and complaints from the public.
- Drive a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location (for some programs).
- Assist with department events and field trips.
- May serve as the manager on duty if the Facility Manager is not available.
