About The Position

The primary function of this employee is to manage the daily recreation and programming operations of assigned park. Under occasional supervision, this employee develops, coordinates and implements programs, activities and events to meet the recreation and leisure needs of the community. Performs related administrative and professional work as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in parks, recreation and tourism, leisure services or related field
  • One to two years of responsible experience in parks and recreation programming or childcare, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Communication skills
  • Grant writing experience
  • Basic carpentry and other trades skills

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, schedules, supervises and/or conducts recreation programs, activities and events, which may include day camps, after-school programs, activities for senior citizens, athletic programs, holiday programs, and various special events.
  • Develops program / event budgets; seeks and secures program sponsorships; maintains records of expenditures and revenues.
  • Registers participants for programs; collects, receipts and records program fees.
  • Procures required supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Recruits, coordinates and supervises the work of contracted / part-time staff, volunteers, community service workers and inmate laborers; offers training, advice and assistance as needed.
  • Serves as program facilitator or instructor as appropriate.
  • Evaluates programs for effectiveness; makes recommendations for modifications or enhancements as appropriate.
  • Compiles attendance data for reports.
  • Coordinates the preparation of all related correspondence, reports, etc.
  • Coordinates and facilitates related meetings and training.
  • Assists with planning and implementing major events sponsored by the department as required.
  • Assists with the operation of the concession stand.
  • Assists in ensuring the proper maintenance facilities and grounds; inspects facility and equipment for maintenance needs and prepares work requests.
  • Takes appropriate steps to ensure the safety of all citizens that utilize department property and facilities and take part in any activity offered by the department.
  • Receives and responds to public / participant inquiries, concerns and complaints.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and issues in public recreation by reading professional publications and attending conferences, workshops, meetings, etc.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs duties of Park Specialist in his/her absence.
  • Receives and reviews various records and reports, including schedules, registration forms, memos, correspondence, etc.
  • Prepares and/or processes a variety of documents, including but not limited to injury / accident reports, program proposals, schedules and calendars, inventory records and reports, and various other records, reports, memos and correspondence.
  • Refers to policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, program resources, sports rules, safety guidelines, etc.
  • Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, cash register, etc.
  • Uses computer and clerical supplies, first aid supplies, sports paraphernalia, craft supplies, maintenance supplies, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other County supervisors and personnel, co-workers, inmate laborers, volunteers, program participants, parents, and the general public.
  • Performs related work as required.
