About The Position

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and passionate Recreation Specialist to join their team. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing specific area programs and offering services to diverse communities, including youth and teens, adults, and seniors. The programs will cover areas such as after-school programs, athletics, arts and crafts, social events, summer/day camps, and health and wellness. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, and exceptional time management skills. This is a full-time position located at Tom Sykes Recreation Center, with a rotating schedule that includes mornings, daytime, evenings, and weekends based on business needs. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Combination of relevant experience and relevant education accepted.
  • Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
  • Requires the ability to obtain (within one year of hire) and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of recreational programming and instruction.
  • Knowledge of instruction in area of specialist.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of public recreation for all ages.
  • Skill in applying recreation knowledge through hands-on activities while meeting the needs of diverse populations.
  • Skill in developing and enforcing general rules and safety procedures.
  • Skill in managing multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Skill in organizing and presenting demonstrations in area of specialization.
  • Ability to lead programs of mass quantities.
  • Ability to build trust by interacting with others in a way that gives them confidence in one’s intentions and those of the organization.
  • Ability to apply learning by assimilating and applying new job-related information in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
  • Provide customer service and handle funds in a recreation center or park facility through various channels (telephone, emails, web site, social media, walk-in patrons) for information, program registration, center daily use, and rentals.
  • Ensure the safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
  • Enforce rules and regulations.
  • Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Referee at various sports activities.
  • May provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or linesperson at games.
  • Supervise children involved in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
  • Handle inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location.
  • Assist with department events and field trips.
  • May serve as manager on duty if Facility Manager is not available.
