About The Position

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and passionate Part Time Recreation Specialist to join their team. This role involves planning, organizing, and executing specific area programs and offering services to diverse communities, including preschoolers, youth, adults, and seniors. Program areas may encompass athletics, social events, afterschool programs, summer/day camps, and health and wellness. The selected candidate will be instrumental in forming strong community partnerships and assessing needs for expanded program offerings. This part-time position is based at Berewick Recreation Center, with approximately 29 hours per week, including mid-day shifts (starting at 12:00 pm), evenings, and rotating weekends as dictated by business needs. Applicants for this position may be considered for similar roles at other Park and Recreation locations if they meet the minimum qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
  • Requires the ability to obtain (within one year of hire) and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of recreational programming and instruction.
  • Knowledge of instruction in area of specialist.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of public recreation for all ages.
  • Skills in applying recreation knowledge through hands-on activities while meeting the needs of diverse populations.
  • Skills in developing and enforcing general rules and safety procedures.
  • Skills in managing multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Skills in organizing and presenting demonstrations in area of specialization.
  • Abilities in building trust by interacting with others in a way that gives them confidence in one’s intentions and those of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2-3 years’ experience facilitating community-based recreation programs for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in activity programming for afterschool programs.
  • Bachelor's degree with 6 months of prior work experience as a temporary or part-time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
  • Associates, or Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of related experience.
  • Four (4) years of similar related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
  • Provide customer service and handle funds in a recreation center or park facility through various channels (telephone, emails, website, social media, walk-ins) for information, program registration, center daily use, and rentals.
  • Ensure the safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
  • Enforce rules and regulations.
  • Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Referee at various sports activities.
  • May provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or linesperson at games.
  • Supervise children involved in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
  • Handle inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location.
  • Assist with department events and field trips.
  • May serve as manager on duty if the Recreation Facility Manager is not available.
