About The Position

The Recreation Specialist leads recreational/leisure activities for groups of varying ages at recreation centers and selected sites. This classification may also coordinate the efforts of recreational staff and volunteer, seasonal and intermittent personnel.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months of experience coordinating, leading, or assisting in recreational, educational, or community programs involving individuals or groups of varying ages. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Pre-employment background checks.
  • Satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum six (6) months experience leading recreation activities for youth programs.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience leading recreation activities for adults of all ages.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience using basic computer applications/programs.
  • Minimum three (3) months experience leading fitness or exercise activities.
  • CPR/First Aid certification within two months of hire.
  • National Fitness certification within first six months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and coordinates recreational, special events and sports activities for participants of all ages
  • Maintains close liaison with the community and provides information about recreation activities
  • May coordinate recreation activities and special events with social activities of other agencies
  • Interprets and explains game rules and organizes teams in sports
  • Supervises the issuance, use and care of recreation supplies and equipment
  • Officiates informal sports and team activities
  • Coordinates work of assigned recreation personnel and volunteers
  • Ensures safety and cleanliness of recreation facilities
  • Guides participants and maintains discipline
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • May be required to collect money, prepare and make bank deposits or process payments utilizing registration software
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a National Fitness Certification and teach fitness classes
  • Uses technology for creating documents, preparing reports, maintaining records and communication
