About The Position

The Recreation Program Supervisor plays a key role in delivering high-quality recreational programming and community events for the City of Albemarle. The Supervisor plans, coordinates, implements, and oversees a variety of recreational, athletic, and leisure programs with a focus on adults ages 50 and older. The role also supports citywide special events through sponsor engagement, volunteer coordination, logistical planning, permit approval, and event promotion. This position requires strong organizational skills, excellent communication, and the ability to collaborate with community partners, volunteers, and staff. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and involves both indoor and outdoor environments. Work is performed in accordance with Departmental rules and policies and requires judgment and discretion in interpretation of programs, and the application of game rules, and procedures. This position is housed in an active recreation center. Employees are subject to hazards in parks and recreation including working both inside and outside environments and in extreme temperatures and noise. Duties may also expose the employee to human body fluids and the work is covered by the OSHA requirements of blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and/or Sr. Recreation Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, thorough observation, and public feedback.

Requirements

2–4 years of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating community-based programs.
Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, physical education, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
CPR/First Aid certification (within the timeframespecified by supervisor).

Responsibilities

Plan, organize, fundraise, and promote the Uwharrie Senior Games program in accordance with North Carolina Senior Games guidelines.
Coordinate year-round outreach, education, classes, trips, and special events for older adults through collaboration with local agencies.
Plan, organize, promote, and facilitate recreation activities for a variety of population groups, including classes, educational programs, special events, day trips, and other assigned activities.
Recruit, train, assign, and supervise volunteers, coaches, officials, and paid staff.
Maintain consistent rules, policies, and procedures; apply solution-based thinking to resolve conflicts.
Plan, coordinate, promote, and facilitate special events, including Uwharrie Senior Games ceremonies, Thursday Nights at the Station, and other assigned Citywide events.
Assist in obtaining and retaining event sponsors, partners, and supporters.
Support event logistics, staffing, vendor coordination, volunteer management, and on-site implementation.
Prepare event materials, schedules, promotional documents, press releases, and other communications as needed.
Assist in creating flyers, marketing materials, and other promotional content consistent with departmental branding.
Schedule program spaces, secure facilities for events, and coordinate with departmental staff on setup needs.
Monitor the recreation center to ensure safe, clean, and well-maintained facilities; responsible for opening and closing the building as needed.
Assist in developing and executing departmental policies and procedures.
Support grant activities including locating opportunities, preparing applications, administering awards, and tracking inventory and supplies.
Use RecDesk for program registration, rentals, and transactions; use Torch for Senior Games athlete registration; use social media sites to promote programs and provide information.
Serve as a liaison with public and private agencies as directed.
Assist with preparing regular and special reports.
Perform related duties as assigned.
