About The Position

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, administered under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). The program supports youth aged 15 to 30 in gaining paid summer work experience while developing skills for the job market. Under the direction of the Recreation Facilitator, assists to facilitate and evaluates Recreation Programs to meet the social, physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of designated individuals and groups of Residents in accordance with Manitoba Health Standards. Functions as part of the interdisciplinary team. The Recreation Facilitator Assistant works within the framework of Golden Links Lodge’s Mission, Vision & Values and in accordance with its policies and procedures. Supervises and evaluates Volunteers and Students assigned to the program as requested.

Requirements

Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employment
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Be legally entitled to work in Canada, including possession of a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of employment
Currently Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution, or a recent graduate.
Previous experience working with the elderly
Experience in personal care home setting.
Experience implementing, leading or evaluating Recreation Programs.
Other relevant experience
Physical and mental health to meet the requirements of the position.
Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively in English.
Knowledge of the needs of the elderly and an ability to relate to them with warmth and empathy.
Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness and creativity.
Ability to adapt to changing needs of Residents.
Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend fluent English is required.
Able to carry out duties in a professional manner, working independently and as part of a team.
Understands and respects Residents’ rights and privacy, and presents a courteous, cooperative and professional manner to both Residents and Staff while performing duties.
Good organizational skills, with ability to adapt to changing needs and requirements.
Promotes a homelike atmosphere within Golden Links Lodge.
Computer literacy.

Nice To Haves

Preference will be given to those enrolled in programs relating to the position.
Training in Non-Crisis Intervention, First Aid / CPR and Food Handler’s Certificate an asset.

Responsibilities

Conducts individualized recreation assessments on Residents, according to GLL guidelines.
Participates in team meetings and planning sessions.
Provides input into the planning process.
Participates in the selection of recreation supplies and equipment, being conscious of the budgetary constraints.
Assist or lead individual, small and large group recreation programs.
Supports individual leisure lifestyles as appropriate to meet identified Resident needs.
Helps to promote recreation events within the facility.
Participates in the supervision and direction of volunteers in providing recreation services to Residents.
Supports the economical use, safe storage and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
Communicates recreation programs and goals with residents, families and team members in a designated facility format.
Reports any unusual incidents or concerns regarding resident care to the appropriate person.
Records service specific documentation such as program outlines.
In consultation with the Recreation Facilitator, helps to evaluate the success of meeting individual resident needs.
Reviews functions related to therapeutic recreation services as assigned.
Provides unit and program relief as directed.
Maintains knowledge base on Safe Resident Movement and Handling, Routine Practices and Managing Feeding and Swallowing Difficulties.
Assists Residents as necessary with their refreshments when served at programs.
Prepare/arrange for advertising a special event or program (including decorating, poster making, etc.).
Maintains the dignity and confidentiality of Golden Links Lodge and the Resident’s Bill of Rights.
Assists participants with personal needs as required.
Supports Facility initiatives including the quality program.
Reviews departmental procedures and processes as assigned.
Displays a positive work ethic.
Adheres to the GLL Dress Code policy.
Performs other duties as requested.
